Early in the 1st Succession War the Blackhawks sought to refine the combined arms philosophy in order to optimize their effectiveness as an independent mercenary command.  From their inception as SLDF regiments the Blackhawks regiments were designed as combined arms units.  As they progressed in their experience as a mercenary force the Blackhawks refined the combined arms concept to a new level.

Each of the Blackhawks four regiments are organized into three composite units known as BattleGroups.  Each BattleGroup is composed of three BattleMech companies, three conventional armor companies, six mechanized infantry companies. three recon companies, one artillery company and one AeroSpace fighter squadron.  Trained in coordinated actions down to the company/lance level, the Blackhawks BattleGroups are unparalleled in their flexibility and striking power.  Attached to each regiment is an Independent AeroSpace fighter wing tasked with air/space superiority missions.  Having striven to maintain maximum autonomy from outside support, the Blackhawks are masters of their own destiny.

In addition to its four combat regiments the Blackhawks also maintain four independent Operational Commands.  Transport Command controls and maintains all JumpShip and DropShip assets and their personnel.  Training Command is responsible for the recruiting and training of new members as well as maintaining all training regimens for the entire unit.  Logistics Command oversees the procurement and maintenance of all supplies and equipment utilized by the Blackhawks.  Security and Intellegence Command is tasked with intelligence gathering as well as defending against outside intelligence agancies.  A sub-section of the S.I. Command is 'Black Omega' the Blackhawks  special operations unit.  On par with DEST, MI6, and 7th Kommando, Black Omega excels at any number of covert and battlefield special operations.  Black Omega was also the first Blackhawk unit to be equipped with BattleArmor

The Blackhawks Table of Organization and Equipment lists a majority of 3055 and older designs.  In addition, the Blackhawks have maintained a modernization program since 3045 which has enabled all Blackhawks BattleMechs to have been upgraded to at least 3050 level technology.  Currently more advanced Inner Sphere technology as well as some Clan equipment is being incorporated into Blackhawk Mechs and vehicles.  The Blackhawks currently possess in excess of two battalions worth of captured/purchased Clan OmniMechs and second line Mechs.
