Tortuga Republic

INTRODUCTION:

The Tortuga Republic was established in 3075 in what had for centuries been known as the Tortuga Dominions, a backwater haven for pirates, cutthroats and all other manner of dregs of society. During the course of a Periphery campaign against Word of Blake forces located in and around Tortugan space, the Blackhawks Armored Cavalry and other allied units successfully eliminated WoB units and their pirate allies.

With the Tortugan systems now secured, the Blackhawks led force put down roots in Dominion space and began a wholesale migration from the Inner Sphere. This migration was the second phase of the campaign against the Word Of Blake in the Tortugan area and was organized in response to the savagery of the Blakist "Jihad" against the Inner Sphere. It was agreed that the chaos being loosed made it simply too hazardous for the dependents and industrial assets of the Blackhawks to remain in the center of the firestorm.

As many have done in the past, the Blackhawks led migration set out into the Periphery to make a fresh start and to better control their own destiny.

Located outside the Periphery border of the Federated Suns and situated between the Taurian Concordat and the Outworlds Alliance, the Tortuga Republic is relatively isolated, but remains close enough to these realms to maintain regular contact. This location in the Periphery served as both a boon and a bane to generations of thugs and pirates and their hapless victims during the days of the old Dominion.

   Originally settled by a 'rogue' Fed Suns unit and later controlled by a variety of pirate bands, the Tortuga Dominions have finally been rid of the brutal pirate overlords that kept the local population along with citizens of other Periphery and Inner Sphere realms in constant fear for generations.

   In stark contrast to the status-quo anarchy of the old Dominions, the Blackhawks and their allies set out to establish a legitimate Periphery state with a proper government and military to bring a new level of peace and security to a region of the Periphery long wearied by chaos.

   Following the succesful drafting and ratification of a formal constitution in 3075, the Tortuga Republic was born.
